Order of the Sword & Shield Honor Society

The Order of the Sword & Shield Honor Society (OSS) is the academic and professional honor society for homeland security, intelligence, emergency management, and all protective security disciplines.

Membership & Fees

Benefits include: Public recognition as an outstanding individual within the discipline, the opportunity to participate in activities that promote your interests, networking with high achieving individuals with a common interest, and the development of key skills in organization-sponsored events.

Lifetime membership fee: $75.

Chapter Standing

The Order of the Sword and Shield has achieved BRONZE standing, per the university's Chapter Standards program. Bronze standing demonstrates a notable level of chapter involvement and denotes excellence in chapter leadership and member engagement.

Campus leadership opportunities are a great way to meet other students, alumni, and faculty at the university while also developing skills in the areas of:

  • Self-management
  • Administrative and project management
  • Organizational knowledge and strategy
  • Critical thinking and reflection
  • Communication skills
  • Leadership and teamwork

The Office of Student and Alumni Affairs is always looking for people to get involved and be campus leaders, including chapter officers, who lead student organizations like this one. If you’re interested in being a campus leader and chapter officer, please email studentaffairs@apus.edu to ask if there are chapter officer openings for this organization!

Eligibility

Eligible students meeting the criteria below will receive an invitation during the months of April and October. If you believe you are eligible and do not receive an invitation, email studentaffairs@apus.edu.

Criteria:

General Membership

  • Active university student pursuing a graduate, undergraduate degree, or certificate in homeland security, intelligence, security management, emergency management fields
  • Comply with the university policies on academic integrity

Additional Certificate Membership Criteria

  • Completed at least six semester hours at the university
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater at the undergraduate level
  • Pursuing a certificate in competitive intelligence, corrections management, counterintelligence, criminal justice, cybercrime, cybercrime essentials, cybersecurity, digital forensics, emergency management, emergency management executive leadership, emergency and disaster management, environmental hazard mitigation and restoration, environmental planning and design, executive law enforcement leadership, explosive ordnance disposal, forensics, foundations of homeland security, homeland security, IT infrastructure security, information assurance, information security planning, information systems security, information systems security essentials, intelligence analysis, intelligence studies, joint warfare, law enforcement leadership, national security studies, security management, terrorism studies, or weapons of mass destruction preparedness.

Additional Associate Membership Criteria

  • Completed at least six semester hours at the university
  • Completed at least 30 semester hours total
  • Completed at least 12 semester hours towards core courses
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater at the undergraduate level
  • Pursuing a degree in counter terrorism studies, criminal justice, explosive ordnance disposal, fire science, or weapons of mass destruction preparedness.

Additional Bachelor Membership Criteria

  • Completed at least six semester hours at the university
  • Completed at least 60 semester hours total
  • Completed at least 12 semester hours towards core courses
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater at the undergraduate level
  • Pursuing a degree in criminal justice, cybersecurity, emergency and disaster management, homeland security, information systems security, security management or intelligence studies.

Additional Graduate Membership Criteria

  • Completed at least six semester hours at the university
  • Completed at least 18 semester hours total
  • Completed at least 9 semester hours towards core courses
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater at the graduate level
  • Pursuing a degree in criminal justice, cybersecurity studies, emergency and disaster management, fire science management, homeland security, intelligence studies, international relations and conflict resolution, national security studies or security management.

Professional Membership Criteria

  • At least five years full-time work experience within the homeland security, intelligence, emergency management or any protective security sector.
