Rapidly changing healthcare systems demand that advanced practice nurses possess knowledge of the effective use of informatics and technology to enhance patient care in a variety of settings. This course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to improve patient outcomes through effective use of these technological resources. Topics include electronic medical records, data analysis, safe management of patient care technology, health literacy, and related ethical issues. (Prerequisite: NURS502)

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:


LO1: Interpret healthcare outcome data for the purpose of identifying and reducing risks and improving healthcare outcomes.

LO2: Analyze the ethical issues related to the use of patient care technology.

LO3: Evaluate the impact of electronic medical records on the delivery of safe and effective patient care.

LO4: Assess the effects of emerging healthcare technologies and their impact on advanced nursing practice and health outcomes.

LO5: Examine both positive and negative aspects of the emergence of technology on the health literacy of patients and families.

Forum

Students are required to participate in the forums each week. Replies must be posted in the week due and replies after the end of each week will not be graded. The Forums are for student interaction and input should be submitted before the week ends in order to fully participate in the discussions. Students should demonstrate their own knowledge in the forums and avoid copying and pasting from websites.

Guidelines:

  • Post the initial response to each forum by 11:55pm, ET, Thursday.
  • Initial responses should be no less than 300 words and include citation to at least 2 credible sources.
  • Initial responses are to be original in content and demonstrate a thorough analysis of the topic.
  • Reply to at least 2 of your classmates in each forum by 11:55pm, ET, Sunday.
  • Replies to classmates should be no less than 200 words.
  • Responses to classmates are significant to advance the forum.
  • All forums can be accessed in the Forums section of the course.

Forum Grading Rubric

Ethics and Informatics Paper

Write a 2,000-3,000 word essay describing an unethical use of electronic health information of which you are aware. It may or may not be an event that took place at your employer. Describe what led up to the event, how it happened, and how it was (or was not) properly addressed by the person(s) in charge of protecting personal health information. Suggest an appropriate method for avoiding such events in the future. Include at least 3-5 scholarly references. The paper should be in APA format.

Your Research Paper will be evaluated against the Graduate Level Writing Rubric.

Creative Applications (Wikis, Blogs, Podcasts, etc.) Assignment

Construct a 1,000 word blog describing your experience and insight on implementing a new electronic health record. Include at least 2 scholarly sources.

Nursing Informatics and Applications Paper

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid have developed a Prescription Drug Dashboard (PDD) to help nurses and other health care providers improve access to and utilization of prescribed medications, particularly those medications which are very costly. Write a 2,000-3,000 word essay describing your anticipated role as a nurse educator or as a nurse leader in utilizing electronic health data such as the PDD data to improve health care quality, nursing practice, or organizational performance. Include at least 3-5 scholarly references.

Your Research Paper will be evaluated against the Graduate Level Writing Rubric.

Nursing Informatics and Applications Paper Presentation

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation to share your Nursing Informatics Applications Essay with your student peers. Review the presentations of at least 2 of your peers and provide feedback on their ideas and presentation.

The School of Health Sciences requires use of APA style and format and each student is required to have a current copy of the APA Publication Manual. All written assignments are to be submitted in APA format style unless otherwise noted in the assignment directions.
