Biography - Julie T Thompson


Dr. Julie Tolman Thompson received her B.S. and M.S. in Zoology from Brigham Young University. She studied black bears in Utah for her master’s research. Dr. Thompson continued her academic career at the University of Oregon and received her Ph.D. in Biology in 2002. Her dissertation integrated research in animal behavior and evolutionary biology using lizards as a model system.

Dr. Thompson’s research and current practice centers on understanding ecological associations and designing appropriate methodologies for endangered species, wildlife species, and model species. Dr. Thompson is currently an Ecologist and Project Scientist for a private environmental consulting firm. She has previously worked as an ecologist in the private and government sectors, as well as, a post-doctoral research associate. Dr. Thompson has taught a diversity of biological courses from Genetics to Animal Behavior and Ecology. She has great enthusiasm for teaching. She currently teaches Introduction to Environmental Science (SCIN 140) and Introduction to Biology (SCIN 130).

Dr. Thompson has published various articles on ecological, behavioral, and evolutionary research. She enjoys serving the community in various roles and serves on the board of directors for a local land conservation trust. She loves everything outdoors and nature. Dr. Thompson grew up as the daughter of an active duty serviceman and currently has three brothers and close friends serving in the military.
