Faculty Awards

Our faculty awards recognize outstanding experienced and new faculty at the graduate and undergraduate levels who demonstrates teaching excellence, is a University leader and scholar, and is dedicated to leading our students into the future.

Nominations are accepted until February 1, 2019.

Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Award

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrates teaching excellence in the classroom as evidenced by observations of classrooms; compliance with APUS policies; and feedback on end-of-course evaluations
  • Values innovation in teaching and learning and use of innovative classroom technologies
  • Shows support of student learning and persistence in learning
  • Provides scholarly contributions
  • Demonstrates leadership in APUS and related communities

Required Documentation

  • Completed nomination form
  • A copy of the nominee's current CV to include scholarly publications
  • A detailed rationale (1-2 pages, 12pt. font) to support this nomination while providing examples that show the criteria listed above have been met
    • These examples include: innovative course curricula, CFWI rates, DWFI rates, COI scores, End of Course Surveys, examples of redacted student work with feedback.  Please provide a brief reflection on each artifact included

Nomination Process

  • Nominees may be self-nominated, nominated by a student, a member of the faculty or staff, or another person outside the university who knows the nominee and the university well
  • Nominees will be notified of their nomination and encouraged to apply for the award

Graduate Excellence in Teaching Award

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrates teaching excellence in the classroom at the graduate level as evidenced by observations of classrooms; compliance with APUS policies, and feedback on end-of-course evaluations
  • National recognition for contribution (service) or scholarship
  • Outstanding innovations in teaching and learning (including movement towards e-resources)
  • Retention of students (including improved CFWI rates)
  • Scholarly contributions since 2013 (publications, presentations)
  • Leadership in graduate education at APUS and with related communities

Required Documentation

  • Completed nomination form
  • A copy of the nominee's current CV to include scholarly publications, presentations, collaborations with students
  • A detailed rationale (1-2 pages, 12 pt. font) to support this nomination while providing examples that show the criteria listed above have been met
    • These examples include: innovative course curricula, CFWI rates, DWFI Rates, COI scores, End of Course Surveys, examples of redacted student work with feedback. Please provide a brief reflection on each artifact included
  • Documentation confirming the nominee having taught 75 graduate students since 2016 (provide actual number of courses taught and actual number of registrations)

Faculty members who wish to be considered for one of these awards, please submit the following materials in addition to those listed above:

  • Please write a one to two page statement of your values, goals, and strategies for teaching graduate students. Include examples of innovative practices, such as original course materials or activities, research collaborations with students, or instructional strategies specific to the graduate level. This can be considered the detailed rationale.

Nomination Process

  • Nominees may be nominated by a student, a member of the faculty or staff, or another person outside the university who knows the nominee and the university well. Nominations must be accompanied by director approval
  • Nominees will be notified of their nomination and encouraged to apply for the award

Outstanding New Faculty Member of the Year Award

Selection Criteria

  • Joined APUS between May and November 2018
  • Has taught at least four sections and 100 students
  • Meets APUS standards for classroom quality and academic excellence

Required Documentation

  • Completed nomination form
  • A copy of the nominee's current CV to include scholarly publications
  • A detailed rationale (1-2 pages, 12 pt. font) to support this nomination while providing examples that show the criteria listed above have been met
    • These examples include: innovative course curricula, CFWI rates, DWFI Rates, COI scores, End of Course Surveys, examples of redacted student work with feedback. Please provide a brief reflection on each artifact included

Nomination Process

  • Candidates are nominated by the dean of their respective academic school based on the criteria above
  • Deans provide detailed rationale for the nominee

Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year Award

Selection Criteria

  • Is a scholar in their academic discipline
  • Is a leader in learning in the classroom
  • Is a champion in service to our students, faculty, our constituents and related communities

Required Documentation

  • Completed nomination form
  • A copy of the nominee's current CV to include scholarly publications
  • A detailed rationale (1-2 pages, 12 pt. font) to support this nomination while providing examples that show the criteria listed above have been met
    • These examples include: innovative course curricula, CFWI rates, DWFI Rates, COI scores, End of Course Surveys, examples of redacted student work with feedback. Please provide a brief reflection on each artifact included

Nomination Process

  • Candidates are nominated by the dean of their respective academic school based on the criteria above
  • Deans provide detailed rationale for the nominee

Excellence in Teaching Gateway Courses Award

Selection Criteria

  • Focuses on student engagement and student success
  • Have taught at the gateway course level for at least two years
  • Have taught at least four section and 150 students between May 2018 and January 2019
  • Have DFWI rates below the course average in the course for which they have been nominated
  • Have completed APUS110 with a course grade of at least 90%
  • Meets all standards for classroom quality and academic excellence for appeals, COI scores, and engagement reports

Required Documentation

  • Completed Nomination Form
  • A copy of the nominee's current CV to include scholarly publications
  • A detailed rationale (1-2 pages, 12 pt. font) to support this nomination while providing examples that show the criteria listed above have been met
    • These examples include: innovative course curricula, CFWI rates, DWFI Rates, COI scores, examples of redacted student work with feedback. Please provide a brief reflection on each artifact included

Nomination process

  • Nominations must come from a dean and at least one program/faculty director who have observed the nominee's classroom

Selection Process

  • Once the deadline has passed, eligible nominations are reviewed by the Office of the Provost
  • Nominees will be notified of their nomination
  • Top candidates in each academic school are presented to the University Provost for review
  • Final approval is granted by the University Provost/University President

Commencement Attendance*

Award recipients can expect:

  • One night accommodations and individual travel expenses to attend commencement
  • Recognition during commencement weekend
  • Plaque and medallion to be worn at commencement
*Award recipients are not required to attend commencement to accept the award.
