Course Code: SPHE425 Course ID: 4719 Credit Hours: 3 Level: Undergraduate

This course examines the physiology of healing as well as exercise protocols for orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries. The course provides students with a solid foundation of the theory and practice associated with the design, implementation, progression, and supervision of healing and reconditioning programs. Content includes skillful examination of the process of healing and identifying pertinent stages in order to develop evidence-based programs. Techniques include progression and sequencing, examination and assessment, and application of soft tissue and joint mobilization; range of motion and flexibility, strength and muscle endurance exercises; balance, coordination and agility activities as well as function return to play exercises for full return to play participation.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:
LO.1. Describe the physiology of musculoskeletal injury and healing

LO.2. Explain appropriate interventions available to athletic trainers in managing musculoskeletal injuries

LO.3. Explain and apply current theory related to the management of sport and orthopedic injuries

LO.4. Develop appropriate long and short term goals of rehabilitation with correct medical documentation

LO.5. Effectively develop an exercise progression based on the physiological phase of healing of specific sport injuries

LO.6. Identify return to play criteria and testing for each joint.

LO.7. Analyze and apply components of sports and orthopedic literature when developing a rehabilitation program

Reading Assignments: Will be evaluated as demonstrated in forum discussions and through quizzes and assignment.

Forum Assignments: Introduction forum will require a post of at least 300 words due by Sunday 11:59 PM EST week one. All other forums require an initial post of at least 200 words due by Thurs 11:59 PM EST of the assigned week and at least 2 responses to classmates of at least 200 words by Sunday 11:59 PM EST of the assigned week. Please see forum description for rubric.

Field Experience Assignments: NA

Final Project: The final project is a rehabilitation program for a specific sports injury. This project should be worked on throughout the 8 weeks and incorporate the principals discussed in class. Students will need to submit a video demonstrating correct exercises for the rehabilitation as well as providing verbal cues for the patient. The final project has 2 parts:

Written description of the injury done in either a powerpoint, prezi, or video, and part 2 is a worksheet for the patient to take home and perform home exercises.
