Sports First Aid is the recognition and emergency treatment of sports injuries sustained during the participation in a sporting event. Students in this course will learn basic first aid principles in order to provide emergency care to injured athletes. Students will develop a basic knowledge of common sports injuries to be able to administer appropriate sports first aid. This course will introduce the role of the coach as well as other medical professionals that provide first aid to athletes. Focus will placed on techniques and concepts used to treat these sports injuries. Students taking this course will become a competent first aid responder for basic athletic injuries.

  • LO-3 List appropriate methods of administering CPR, AED application, and clearing an airway.
  • LO-4 Describe the application and administration of appropriate sport first aid for bleeding.
  • LO-5 Exam methods on how to transport an athlete who has sustained a head/neck injury.
  • LO-6: Develop a medical and weather emergency action plan for an athletic team and facility
  • LO-7 Analyze and describe how to recognize and treat upper body sport injuries.
  • LO-8 Analyze and describe how to recognize and treat lower body sport injuries.
  • LO-9 Describe the appropriate methods for providing care of facial and scalp injuries.
  • LO-10 Describe how to prevent contagious skin conditions from spreading among athletes.

Reading Assignments: Will be evaluated as demonstrated in forum discussions.

Forum Assignments: Each student must submit an initial post which is at least 250 words in length and includes at least one scholarly reference. Some instructors may require students to submit their initial forum posts to Turnitin in through the "Assignments" tab in the Sakai classroom--please check your syllabus to determine if this step is required for this course. Students are evaluated on the ability to validate, support, and provide evidence for their responses. Each student must also submit at least two classmate postings which are at least 100 words in length. The goal of classmate postings is to provide a professional, scholarly, and honest evaluation of your classmate’s content. Students are encouraged to engage in dialogue by asking pertinent questions and stating why or why not they agree with their classmates post. Initial posts are due on Wednesday by 11:55pm ET and at least two peer replies are due by Sunday at 11:55pm ET

Exams/Quizzes: There are a total of 4 quizzes. All quizzes are times. Please read the directions carefully. Once you open the quiz, you cannot stop and continue at another time. You are able to use your text for the quiz.

Field Experience Assignments: NA

Final Project: You will create a sports first aid brochure, indicating anatomy, mechanism of injury and immediate care of the injury. Please see final assignment for me details.
