This course presents information and insight that identifies the challenging and overarching issues surrounding Heath Care Administration. It carefully examines the broad functions, operations and tools of the field and emphasizes the need for excellence in the management of health services. This course will assist students as they prepare for health services management careers and provides an ongoing program of professional development for those already employed in health professions. The course is divided into three parts: Managing in Health Services Environments, Managerial Tools and Techniques, and Managing Relationships.

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the role of management, organizational behavior and management thinking in healthcare
- Explain key aspects of quality improvement in healthcare
- Describe the four primary barriers to healthcare information technology (HIT) adoption
- Explain the role of finance in healthcare service delivery and healthcare management
- Identify environmental factors that affect human resources functions in health services organizations
- Explain the concepts of health disparities, benefits of cultural competency, and cultural proficiency
- Explain core concepts of ethics and law in healthcare
- Demonstrate knowledge gained about healthcare management
Please join the forums each week. Replies must be posted in the week due and replies after the end of the each week will not be graded. The Forums are for student interaction and input should be submitted before the week ends in order to fully participate in the discussions. Students should demonstrate their own knowledge in the forums and avoid copying and pasting from websites.
• Post the initial response to each forum by 11:55pm, ET, Wednesday.
• Initial responses should have substance where students explores, explains, expands upon issues being discussed, and applies relevant course materials.
• Initial responses should be very clear and contain relevant information that is understood and is incorporated into postings.
• Students should analyzes course concepts, theories or materials correctly, using examples or supporting evidence.
• Initial responses should be supported by at least two references.
• Reply to at least 2 of your classmates in each forum by 11:55pm, ET, Sunday.
• Students are required to respond to at least two (2) other student’s initial postings (and the instructor) with significant comments that have substance.
• Students should collaborate with fellow learners, relating the discussion to course concepts, add several innovative ideas, and provide considerable additional insight that relates to core concepts.
• Peer responses should include at least two (2) of the following components: Offering advice; posing a question; providing an alternative point-of-view; and acknowledging similar experiences.
• Peer responses should be supported by at least one reference • All forums can be accessed in the Forums section of the course.

• Late Forum posts receive a 10% per day late penalty. If your 2 peer responses are posted after the week is ended (after Day 7, Sunday) they receive a zero, in that the discussion is over and you cannot receive credit for participation in a discussion with others after the discussion week has closed.
Students will be responsible for providing a peer response posting for at least two (2) of their peers’ postings, unless there are less than 3 students in the course, where only one (1) peer posting will be required. Your peer postings should challenge or expound upon at least one of the points made by your peer, and “I agree” does not constitute as an adequate response. As graduate students, you will be expected to provide comprehensive, relevant and well supported points in your assignments.

We honor and respect each person’s diverse beliefs to help us see beyond the classroom to be the most effective individuals we can be. Therefore, we should all be respectful of others while expressing our viewpoints and opinions. Proper netiquette behavior is expected. Any inflammatory, demeaning or disrespectful language in a posting will be immediately removed from the discussion space.
Your introduction forum during Week 1 is worth 10 points. Other forum assignments (Weeks 1-8) will be worth 100 points each.
Assignments: Students will have six (6) assignments that must be completed and uploaded as directed. Each response must be at least 100 words per question for a total of 200 words for each assignment. You can earn between one (1) and thirty (100) points per assignment depending on your efforts (see assignment rubric), for a possible grand total of 600 points and 35% of your total grade for the class.

- Assignments submitted late without advance notice will receive a 5% per day late penalty and will not be accepted for grading five (5) days past the due date.
Midterm Exam: Please answer all of the questions using your best judgment first then go back and go over questions that you were unsure of. Choose the BEST answer of the choices given. You should plan 1 hour to complete the exam. The exam is made of 20 multiple choice questions (5 points per question). Do not open the exam link until you are ready to actually start the exam. Make sure the room is conducive to exam taking. In other words, make sure the children are in bed, the room is quiet, pets are secured, etc. This midterm exam is 20% of your total grade.
Final Exam: Please answer all of the questions using your best judgment first then go back and go over questions that you were unsure of. Choose the BEST answer of the choices given.
