This course will cover African-American literature from the earliest times to the present; development of prose and poetry, the novel; and the evolution of African-American political and social discourse through literature. (Prerequisites: ENGL101 or ENGL110)

1. Demonstrate literary analysis skills
2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills
3. Identify and analyze various literary genres
4. Recognize literary elements in various genres
5. Identify major writers and works of African American literature
6. Discuss the contribution and value of major African American writers to American Literature and culture
7. Identify major themes of African American literature.
8. Explain the role of abolition and social protest in literature
9. Discuss the impact of the “renaissance” in African American literature
10. Discuss the connection between African American literature and identity.
11. Discuss race, gender and sexuality in African American literature.
12. Define how various social, political, cultural or artistic movements (For example, women’s rights, the abolition movement, Black Nationalism) impacted American literature and history.
