This course provides an overview of the analysis of political leaders. It explores various political psychological approaches to studying leaders to include biographies, psychoanalysis, traits, characteristics and motivations. Examples of specific political leaders are discussed throughout the course to offer the student a broad knowledge of world leaders. The course also provides students with a solid foundation from which to conduct their independent analysis of political leaders.

CO-1: Apply political psychological concepts and methodologies to study political leaders

CO-2: Differentiate the various types of personality based measures used to study political leaders

CO-3: Evaluate the application of political psychological concepts to the study of political leaders

CO-4: Generate a research design for a political profile of a world leader using the personality based measures discussed in this course

CO-5: Synthesize the utility of personality based measures in decision making processes

The course grade is based on the following assessments:

Discussion Forums – 20 percent

Discussion questions will be provided and posts should reflect an assimilation of the readings and respond to the assig ned topic(s). Students are required to provide a substantive initial post by Thursday at 11:55 pm ET and respond to 2 or more classmates by Sunday 11:55 pm ET. Forum posts are graded on timeliness, relevance, knowledge of the weekly readings, and the quality of original ideas.

Midterm Assignment – 25 percent

This assignment will be an essay examining the potential to profile leaders at a distance. This assignment will be 8-10 pages in length. More information on this assignment is provided within the lessons area of the classroom.

Literature Review – 25 percent

This assignment will be a literature focused on one of the topics covered during week 2-6. This assignment should be 8-10 pages in length. More information on this assignment is provided within the lessons area of the classroom.

Research Proposal & Design – 30 percent

This assignment will be the development of a research design focused on profiling a current world leader. For this assignment you will need to develop your research methodology using a variety of the profile method covered in this course. More information on this assignment is provided within the lessons area of the classroom.
