This course examines the "Age of the Enlightenment" in France with the reigns of King Louis XV and Louis XVI. Through readings of the functioning of the monarchy, on the world of everyday peoples in Paris and the countryside, and the intellectual climate of the era, students will be able to reconstruct the time known as "the ancient regime." The class will also analyze readings by authors such as Diderot, Voltaire, DuChâtelet, and Rousseau to gain a sense of the intellectual excitement of the "Enlightenment." (Prerequisites: HIST300/HS334 for History and Military History majors only)

- Synthesize the major milestones in the evolution of the French Enlightenment, from roughly 1640-1800.
- Appraise the social, political and economic situations that took place during the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI.
- Analyze the impact of the Enlightenment and the Philosophes on the period of the French Revolution, specifically in terms of philosophical, political and religious changes.
- Evaluate the social, economic and political causes of the collapse of the French monarchy.
- Deduce how Enlightenment ideas were responsible for the radical upheaval, instability and transformation of the nation during the French Revolution.
