This course explores the evolving role of police and corrections in the homeland security enterprise. Historical, social, legal, and operational aspects are considered. Threats and strategies specific to police and correctional facilities and best practices in the field are critically assessed. Furthermore, negotiating relationships with other agencies continues to be a challenge for information sharing and dissemination between different law enforcement and correction agencies. This course examines the role the police should play in the task of preventing and responding to terror and the aftermath of terror. Special emphasis is placed on the relationships between the police and their community and how those relationships can be leveraged post 9/11.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
CO-1: Understand historical aspects of police, corrections and terrorism.
CO-2: Evaluate the role of police and correctional facilities in homeland security-related functions.
CO-3: Analyze the impact of homeland security threats on police and correctional organizations.
CO-4: Understand the challenges of balancing of civil liberties and security in policing and corrections.
CO-5: Examine the post 9/11 relationships between the police and community
CO-6: Assess the effectiveness of police counter-terrorism strategies.
The course grade is based on the following assessments:
Discussions – 20 percent
Each week, a discussion question is provided and posts should reflect an assimilation of the readings. Students are required to provide a substantive initial post by Thursday at 11:59 pm ET (Sunday 11:59 PM ET for week 1) and respond to two or more classmates by Sunday 11:59 pm ET. Discussion posts are graded on timeliness, relevance, knowledge of the weekly readings, and the quality of original ideas.
Progress Assignment - 25 percent
Midterm Assignment - 25 percent
Research Paper – 30 percent
