Federal Pell Grants are gift aid. Pell grants are only awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree.

The Pell Grant Program provides grants to undergraduate students who have:

• Demonstrated financial need
• Have not received a bachelor’s or other professional degree
• Meet the other requirements for Federal Student Assistance

*Higher Education Act Reauthorization changes Pell Grant eligibility for students. Beginning July 1, 2009 students who are eligible may receive two full Federal Pell Grant awards in one year. This will allow a student to accelerate the program completion and receive grant funding year round!

The Department of Education uses an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) formula to determine student eligibility and funding amounts. The maximum Federal Pell Grant for the 2009-2010 award year (July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010) is $5,350. Under the new provisions the annual awards range from $476 to $5350 with additional funding up to 200% of the annual award amount.
