GI Bill Comparison

Summary

The GI Bill has a legacy that dates back to 1944 with President Roosevelt signing the GI Bill of Rights. Today, the GI Bill continues to evolve and provide educational opportunities to those who qualify.

American Public University System (APUS) is prepared to assist veterans, active duty military personnel, and their children and spouses who qualify.  Our Military Solutions Team works with you to facilitate your benefits processing to pay for tuition at APUS. At some point during your educational program, you may use up your eligibility for military funding.  If this occurs, APUS' Financial Aid Services team is prepared to show you how to access federal and private aid programs to continue your education with us.

• Current GI Bill benefits only cover certain types of education and training.  All the benefits listed here cover undergraduate and graduate programs at colleges or universities. If you are seeking a different type of training or education, click here to discover what is covered
• Eligible for multiple options?
  
  
  1. If you are eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill as well the Montgomery GI Bill and you choose to use the 9/11 GI Bill education benefits you are making an irrevocable choice to give up the Montgomery Bill benefits
  2. If you are not planning to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill now, you do not need to make your election immediately. Instead, you should wait until closer to the time in which you wish to use your benefits

  1. If you are eligible for a college fund under other GI Bill programs, you will continue to receive your college fund payments
  2. If you participated in the $600 buy-up under the Montgomery GI Bill or REAP you will not receive that additional benefit under the Post 9/11 GI Bill
• For courses beginning after 1 October 2011, Basic Allowance for Housing allowance is payable to students (other than those on active duty) enrolled entirely in distance learning. The housing allowance payable is equal to ½ the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents. Students must have a rate of pursuit greater that half time to receive BAH payments.

Eligibility Based on Military Service Dates

• The primary factor in calculating your amount of benefit under the Post-9/11 GI Bill is the amount of active duty service you served after 9/10/2001
• Your time served dictates how much you will receive in tuition, books, and housing
• The charts below provide levels of entitlement to the amount of consecutive time spent on active duty.
