Brian Freeland
Program Director of Sports Management
American Public University
Brian Freeland is responsible for developing and maintaining quality sports management courses at APU that educate and prepare students for a variety of roles, duties, and responsibilities in the sports industry. Brian supervises faculty, advises students, and manages all of the day-to-day aspects of the sports management degree program including scheduling, curriculum development, faculty hiring, mentoring, evaluation, and involvement with profession organizations. Brian will discuss how students can utilize a degree in sports management to reach their career goals and dreams. Discussion topics will also include how APU prepares students from a theoretical and practical aspect. He will also explain how networking and involvement with specific sports industry organizations and affiliations can help students market themselves for a successful career.
Mike Odom
Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing/Special Projects
Wake Forest Athletics
Mike Odom is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the sports marketing department. He is also responsible for marketing, promotions, advertising, licensing and gameday production for Wake Forest Athletics. Mike will discuss the state of college athletics and how it has been affected by the economy. Mike will also provide insight on the various careers available at the intercollegiate level of sport and offer tips on moving up the athletic department employment ladder.
Kevin Carr
Vice President of Community and Player Programs
NBA Developmental League
Kevin Carr oversees all corporate social responsibility initiatives for the NBA’s Development League and player development programs in an effort to maximize community engagement and prepare players for NBA. Kevin has been a YBG Entrepreneurial Award winner and The Network Journal Top 40 Under Forty Achievement Award winner. Kevin will discuss the role that organizational management and leadership plays in successful employment in the sports industry. Discussion topics will include the culture of working in professional sports and skills needed to be a successful employee in the professional sports arena.
