War Comes to Harpers Ferry: 1861
American Public University (APU) is offering 4th through 12th grade teachers an online, three-credit summer graduate course, "War Comes to Harpers Ferry: 1861." The course will be accompanied by a three-day, summer workshop in historic Harpers Ferry, WV, organized by Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and taught by park historians and other local experts.
Together the APU graduate course and the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park workshop will enhance educator understanding and knowledge of the defining time period in American History covering the secession of Virginia from the Union through the occupation of Harpers Ferry to the night of April 18, with hundreds of Virginia militia closing in on the town, Lieutenant Jones's soldiers blew up the Harpers Ferry Armory and Arsenal, then made their escape.
Teachers are encouraged to sign up early, as registration is limited to the first 30 students who enroll. Please note that you must register separately for both the graduate course and summer workshop, and that the program tuition grant is limited to only those students who attend the summer workshop.

About Harpers Ferry National Historic Park
The history of Harpers Ferry has few parallels in American History. It is more than one event, one date, or one individual. It is multi-layered - involving a diverse number of people and a series of events that influenced the course of our nation's history. Harpers Ferry witnessed the first successful application of interchangeable manufacture, the arrival of the first successful American railroad, John Brown's attack on slavery, the largest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War, and the education of former slaves in one of the earliest integrated schools in the United States.
