  • About the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies

The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) is a world-renowned maritime training and simulation center. The Institute has been providing high-quality maritime training programs for military and commercial mariners for well over thirty years. Today, over one hundred and fifty different courses are available for mariners from around the globe. In addition, MITAGS is one of the few schools in the United States that offers all of the STCW training courses that are necessary to progress from Ordinary Seafarer to Unlimited Master.

The origin of MITAGS can be traced back to the establishment of the Maritime Advancement, Training, Education, and Safety (MATES) Program. The MATES Program is a non-profit Trust that was created in 1968 by major Steamship Lines and the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots (IOMM&P). The original mission of the MATES Program ("to enhance the professionalism of mariners") continues to this day.

  • Why Choose APU?

    • In 2009, American Public University System, the parent of APU, was the recipient of the Sloan Consortium’s award for quality online education.
    • In 2008, the National Survey of Student Engagement found that 97% of seniors at American Public University System would choose us again.

    Affordable Excellence
American Public University offers one of the most affordable options available for pursuing your education online. APU was founded on the concept that everyone with a desire for learning should be able to afford a quality education. Other schools charge two or three times as much in tuition and fees!

At APU, you can earn a master’s degree for about $10,000 (total program tuition, not per year), which is less expensive than you’ll find most state schools. Our undergraduates pay only $750 per course (or approximately $31,000 for a bachelor’s degree). Other online schools charge nearly twice the tuition per credit! Fees? APU minimizes fees that can add significantly to the cost of your degree, setting it apart from other schools that charge technology, application, or admissions fees. APU adds to student savings by providing all books at no cost to degree-seeking undergraduate students through our Book Grant.

Additionally, APU accepts federal student aid and military tuition assistance.

We invite you to join a vibrant community of 70,000 students who have chosen APU to reach their education goals.

    Modern & Relevant Programs
APU offers the relevant programs and courses for today's job market via more than 70 relevant degrees. Just a few of the ways we stay current on industry needs: the majority of our faculty are currently working in the fields they are teaching in; we partner with industry organizations such as the FBI National Academy Associates and build programs and certificates tailored to their needs; and we rely on Industry Advisory Councils made up of corporate members who review our curriculum to ensure its relevance to the skills needed in their industries.

    Experienced & Professional Faculty
Our faculty combines relevant theory with real-world experience. They come with degrees from many of the top institutions around the world, and many are executives in government, business and nonprofit organizations, including the United Nations, State Department, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, and Federal Emergency Management Agency.

    Affordable & Respected
American Public University provides high-quality, affordable distance education to students around the globe. We do not have resident or non-resident students, so tuition is not based on a student's geographical location or home of record.

Transfer Credit

Students at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) are now able to transfer up to 12 credit hours into an APU master's degree. The accepted transfer credits will cover six of the 15 hours required for the major and six credit hours for electives. Graduate courses completed in addition to those at MITAGS may also be eligible for transfer credit up to a maximum of 15 of the 36 total hours within the M.A.

Students who seek any other M.A. degrees may also request to have the transfer credit applied to their degree requirements.  Non-logistics management degrees will vary in regards to additional credit hours accepted for transfer.  For example, a student who seeks an M.A. in Management may transfer credit towards the Human Resource Management course.  Depending on which M.A. a student pursues, additional transfer credit hours up to a maximum of 12 may be available.

Students must apply for enrollment as transfer students and provide the appropriate documentation to verify their previous courses. While awaiting confirmation of their transfer credits, students may register for classes. Full transfer credit will be awarded only after completion of the Chief Mate Master.

  • HRMT600/DM507 – The course, Human Resource Management, is not a core or major requirement for the M.A. in Transportation & Logistics Management degree. Therefore it will fulfill elective requirements for the degree and any other M.A. that does not have this requirement.
  • OMNI599/OM599 - Omnibus credit can be used in the event that there is no direct match between courses completed at other institutions and courses within a degree program at APU. For MITAGS, the omnibus credit of six semester hours will fulfill major requirements of the M.A. in Transportation and Logistics Management degree. For any other degree, it can be used as elective credit for six semester hours.
  • The three semester hours of elective credit can be used as elective credit towards any of our master's degrees – including the M.A. in Transportation and Logistics Management.
  • Any student who is not pursuing an M.A. in Transportation and Logistics Management degree may potentially receive up to 12 semester hours of transfer credit. This depends on the degree requirements specific to each program. HRMT600/DM507 and nine semester hours of elective credit may still be applied to any degree but would depend on the degree requirements.
