Biography - David Williams


Lieutenant Colonel David Williams is currently an active duty officer with the US Army and is pursuing a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research involves measuring the neutron capture and fission cross sections of Uranium-235 to improve the current nuclear data available for modeling. Upon completing his PhD, he will return to teach at the United States Military Academy in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering. Previously he served as a projects officer in the Weapons Assessment and Certification Division of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Energy (DOE). He worked assignments were part of the Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP) which is a science-based program designed to assess the safety, security, and reliability of our existing nuclear stockpile.

Prior to being assigned to NNSA, LTC Williams was an Assistant Professor at the United States Military Academy, West Point. For three years, he taught the two-semester introductory physics course in the Core Physics Program. He was also the Laboratory Course Director for the introductory physics course during his last two years at the academy. In preparation for his teaching assignment, LTC Williams attended the University of Virginia and earned his Master of Science in Physics in 2002.

As an Army Signal Corps Officer, he has served in a variety of positions to include: company commander, assistant battalion operations officer, battalion communications officer, and platoon leader. LTC Williams has also served in various locations, such as South Korea; Ft. Bragg, NC; and Ft. Gordon, GA.

LTC Williams was commissioned in 1991 through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Tulane University, New Orleans where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics.
