Biography - Thomas M Kelly


Dr. Thomas M. Kelly has earned a BA in Political Science from Northern Illinois University, an MA in Secondary Education from Roosevelt University, an MA in Political Science from Loyola University Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago, double majoring in American Government and Urban Politics.

Dr. Kelly is an associate professor in the Political Science Department for the School of Arts and Humanities. He also instructs political science courses for Grantham University and Excelsior College. Previously he has instructed at DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Elgin Community College. Prior to instructing at the college level, he taught US History and World History at the middle school level for Skokie School District 73.5.

While completing his doctorate, he was awarded the UIC Department of Political Science Fellowship, and was twice awarded the Humane Studies Fellowship from the Institute for Humane Studies. With UIC’s Dr. Dick Simpson, he has co-authored “Studying 21st Century Cities” in Judd and Simpson (Eds.) The City, Revisited: Critical Perspectives from Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York, “The New Chicago School of Urbanism and the New Daley Machine” in Urban Affairs Review. In 2009, he presented at the Urban Affairs Association Annual Meeting with Dr. Simpson.

Dr. Kelly also holds a 1st degree black belt in Kyuki-do and instructs martial arts. When he is not teaching, he enjoys spending time with his wife and five children, riding his Harley Davidson, or discussing religion and politics with his friends.
