Dr. Nelson Kofie is originally from Ghana, West Africa. In 1977, he migrated to Canada to pursued his education.
He earned his BA at the University of New Brunswick, New Brunswick; his MA at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, and his Ph.D. at the George Washington University, Washington, DC.
Dr. Kofie taught Sociology at Goucher College for 6 years. From there, he accepted a position at Prince George's Community College as an instructor and department chair of Anthropology, Economics and Sociology for 8 years. Dr. Kofie is currently the Department Head of Anthropology and Sociology at Northern Virginia Community College.
Besides teaching, Dr. Kofie conducts contract research, and facilitates Continuing Education Unit workshops for Social Workers in the Maryland-Virginia area.
Dr. Kofie is the author of Race, Class and the Struggle for Neighborhood, Washington, DC. Routledge (May 1, 1999), and a few articles.
During the summer months, when time and money permits, Dr. Kofie serves as a volunteer Visiting Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast or at National University of Rwanda, Butare, Rwanda. As part of his personal mission to aid education in Africa, Dr. Kofie gathers and ships assortments of academic textbooks to the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.
For hobbies, Dr. Kofie is an avid knitter of patterned sweaters, and he enjoys gardening.
