My name is Cristy Casado Tondeur. I have taught African American Studies/History at multiple universities and colleges, including Indiana University, University of Massachusetts, Westfield State University and APUS. In my classes, we not only discuss the historical time-line of Africans in America but also discuss how history impacts our world today. For example, in Hist 221 we learn about the African slave trade. When you leave my class, it is my goal for you to understand why you should care about something that ended during the 1860's and what the legacy of slavery is today. In Hist 222, we will discuss African American history after Reconstruction through today. When discussing contemporary history, how does the election of President Obama impact the Black experience today? There are some of the many topics we discuss.
I utilize a variety of online teaching methods to help my students gain as much information as possible. In addition to textbook and primary resources, I use PowerPoint presentations, video clips, podcasts, audio clips, web slide shows and in-depth discussion boards to give my students as broad of an experience as possible.
A little bit more about me - I am completing my PhD in Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. My areas of specialty include the Civil Rights Movement, post World War II history, and intersections of race, class and gender in American culture. I am also a HUGE UNC Tarheel fan! I am a misplaced Southerner from Chapel Hill, NC and look forward to eventually moving back to NC. It is just a tad too cold up here in Massachusetts!
I look forward to exposing you to African American history!
