Ms. Larson is a doctoral candidate at the University of Phoenix. Ms. Larson’s doctoral degree is a Doctorate of Management in Information Technology Leadership to be received in December, 2009. Her doctoral dissertation research focuses on a grounded theory qualitative study on establishing enterprise data strategy.

Larson’s dissertation research focuses on developing an enterprise data strategy. An enterprise data strategy refers to an organization’s ability to define a strategy that builds trust and confidence in data as an asset. An enterprise data strategy allows organizations to consistently define, integrate, and retrieve data. Organizations often fail in developing an enterprise data strategy because of self-imposed boundaries that come from following a traditional approach to data management.

The general problem is that organizations lack a sufficient framework required to implement an enterprise data strategy. A sufficient framework is one that guides organizations in understanding the actions, methods, or practices that would make an enterprise data strategy successful. Actions, methods, and practices will define the framework for the strategy and be discovered through this study.

The specific problem that is researched in this study is to understand what actions, methods, and practices have contributed to a successful enterprise data strategy. Without this knowledge, organizations follow traditional data management practices and the strategy often fails.

The study’s significance to leadership is linked to one of the most challenging aspects of IT leadership, the ability to overcome traditional IT paradigms. Larson’s research examines a different paradigm of data management from traditional data management, data at an enterprise level, which conflicts and challenges what IT leadership has known and followed for the last 40 years.
