Biography - Cameron Addis


Instructor Addis currently serves as Professor of History at Austin Community College. He taught previously as Visiting Professor at Texas A and M (College Station), where he received a teaching award from the Corps of Cadets. His first book, Jefferson's Vision for Education, covers the founding of the University of Virginia, the first secular college in western history. In the fall of 2008, he spoke at West Point to commemorate the opening of their new library named for Jefferson, the academy's founder. He has published articles and essays on topics ranging from historical astronomy and Indian relations in the Oregon Territory to Kansas City Jazz, along with encyclopedia entries and book reviews.

Cameron received his PhD in history from the University of Texas, Austin in 2000. He grew up in Mt. Vernon, Iowa before moving to Seattle mid-way through high school. There he attended Western Washington University and the University of Washington, where he got his B.A. in History of Ideas (1989) and M.A. in History (1993). In 1987 he circled the globe while attending classes on Semester-At-Sea.

He currently lives in Austin with his wife Marianne and their two whippets, Luna and Sweet Potato. He enjoys basketball, softball, baking pizzas, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and Red Cross, and managing a fantasy college football league. He recently took up the Cornet.
