
Before he retired in May 2008 Michael J. Bartlett gained more than 37 years experience working in the fish and wildlife policy and management arena. In his last position as director of the New England Field Office, Mr. Bartlett supervised biologists and support staff located in the Concord, New Hampshire headquarters as well as in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine. His work focused on wetlands and hydropower regulation, endangered species recovery, fish and wildlife habitat restoration, and natural resource damage assessment at Superfund sites and oil spills.
Before coming to the New England Field Office, Mr. Bartlett spent 17 years as the Deputy Assistant Regional Director in the Service’s Northeast Regional Office in Hadley, Massachusetts where he directed field and Regional Office staff engaged in an array of activities associated with water resource development projects and federally listed fish and wildlife. In his role as staff to the Assistant Regional Director, Mr. Bartlett participated in formulating and implementing fish and wildlife policies and programs of regional and national scope.
During the early years of his career with the Fish and Wildlife Service, Mr. Bartlett supervised or served as a staff biologist in offices in Ohio and New Jersey.
Mr. Bartlett holds a Master of Science degree in Animal Science (Wildlife Management) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, both from the University of Rhode Island. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969.
Mr. Bartlett currently sits on the Board of the New Hampshire Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association. He enjoys fishing, kayaking, cross country skiing and an array of other outdoor activities.
