Biography - Susan D Gilroy

Susan D Gilroy

I am one on the APUS librarians. If you post to 'Ask A Librarian', I may respond to your question.
Why did I become a librarian. The short answer is that I liked to do research.
As a senior at Stanford, I was one of two students chosen to take independent study from the staff at Hoover Institution. This experience let me to obtain my Masters in Library Science and my Masters in Education from the University of Oregon. My concentration was in government documents.
I began my career as a school librarian, becoming the District Media Librarian for K-12. I then took the position of Executive Director of the Santiago Library System which included college, university, business and public libraries in Orange County CA. I obtained my Masters in Public Administration at that time.
After moving to Idaho I worked in a religious library and, having taken paralegal classes, became the law librarian for the largest law firm in the state. It was at that time I established my grant writing company. I next accepted the challenge of setting up a library for the only Native American and Alaskan Indian art school in the world located in Santa Fe New Mexico.
I then became a research librarian and then a competitive intelligence specialist for the world's sixth largest insurance company.
In January 2002 I accepted the position of Library Director, Travis Air Force Base CA where I am still employed.
In January 2008 I will retire from this position and move to Lowman Idaho (population 238)where I will work for APUS via satellite.
My home is directly on the elk migration path and I often watch deer and elk from my front porch. I am eight hundred yards from the river where I frequently fish.
I have two children, a son in MA and a daughter who has lived the past seven years in Mexico. I have three young grandaughters.
I do Native American beadwork and make straw hats for the local Idaho tourist market.
I look forward to working with you via the Online Library.
