Thomas J. Goetz received a Bachelors in History from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a Masters in History from Northeastern University, and a PhD in Military History from the Graduate School of the City University of New York. He served a term as the Ramsey Chair in Naval Aviation History at the National Air and Space Museum. He wrote a book for the National Guard - Freedoms Shield: The National Guard and Homeland Defense. He has several ongoing research projects: an analytic study of the adoption of jet propulsion for US fighter aircraft, combining his dissertation research on early Air Force jets with the Ramsey research on early Navy jet fighters; investigating the World War II Lend Lease program; and examining the nature of decision making and its impact on military history. His hobbies include building and painting highly detailed model aircraft, tanks, and figures, or if he feels a need to escape all that history for a while, woodworking, fishing, camping, or canoeing.
