The student who graduates with a minor in Family Development will be able to:

  • Examine theories concerning general psychology.
  • Compare and contrast the various familial structures and relationships.
  • Explain and integrate current theoretical explanations of family dynamics.
  • Examine the meaning of and contributors to the development and maintenance of familial relationships.
  • Compare and contrast theoretical and cross-cultural approaches to family dynamics and explain how the similarities and differences could be used as a family life professional.
  • Identify the key professional family life organizations and explain their impact on family life in America.
  • Recognize and discuss how social forces influence family definitions, composition, and change.
  • Examine trends in family formation and dissolution within the context of social change and changing definitions of “family”.
  • Evaluate and think critically about the family as a social institution.
