African-American Studies

The African-American Studies students pursue a minor that covers the growth of African-American history, government, civil rights, culture, commerce, diplomacy, and international relations out of African history. Students will learn of the great works and peoples of African society, Africa’s situation in the 21st Century, the African-American’s historical and contemporary struggles and successes, among many other related issues. This degree is applicable to many different professional fields due to its liberal arts and social sciences component that emphasizes critical thinking, written communications, and quality research.

Students who pursue this minor must take six (6) courses:
RQ300 / COL 300 - Research, Analysis and Writing
SS260 / HIS 260 - Introduction to African and African-American Studies
HS217 / HIS 221- African-American History before 1877
HS218 / HIS 222 - African-American History after 1877
HS340 / HIS 360 - History of Africa
or
HS341 / HIS 341 - Modern Africa
EN308 / LIT 324  - African-American Literature
